Abstract

Abstract In order to genetic analysis of spike characteristics in barley, an experiment was conducted with 100 F3 and F4 barley families derived from Badia × Komino cross at Research Farm college of Agricultural University of Gonbad Kavous (Iran) based on randomized complete block design with three replications. Agronomic traits such as spike length, number of seeds per spike, total of spike, total weight of spike, grain length and grain diameter were measured. Linkage map with 7 SSR and 69 polymorphic alleles of iPBS markers were prepared which covered 632.2 cM of barley genome. QTL analysis was performed based on the method of composite interval mapping (CIM). Ten QTLs (with additive effect ranged from 127.07 for spike number to -0.625 mm for grain length) were detected. Phenotypic variance explained by QTLs ranged from 10.9 to 12.9 percent, which the highest related to spike length in F3 generation and the lowest related to the total number of spikes in F3 generation and the total weight of spike in F4 generation. All detected QTL were major effects and after validation can be used in breeding programs and marker-assisted selection.

Abstract

After cereals, oilseeds are the second-largest food reserves in the world. According to available statistics, more than 95 percent of Iran's oil needs are imported. Given the growing need for edible oils in Iran, it is important to identify fatty acids in the oilseed crops. Camelina sativa L. is an oil-medicinal plant and belongs to the Brassicaceae family that requires very little water and fertilizers. It is known as a low input plant. In this study, to analyze the fatty acid profile for breeding programs and specific industries, 137 doubled haploid camelina lines were evaluated in terms of fatty acid composition and variability of fatty acids trait, to estimate phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV), genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV), heritability, and expected genetic advance. The determination of fatty acid by gas chromatography showed that 18 types of fatty acids were detectable in camelina seed oil. It is shown that the two fatty acids (C14:0 and C16:1) have the highest PCV and GCV. The highest heritability for C20:2, C20:3 and C20:0 fatty acids was estimated 98.92, 98.59 and 96.49 percent, respectively. In this study, two lines with linoleic acid of 35.81-36.67% and four lines with values ranged from 22.08-23.00% were introduced. The ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 (0.479-0.759) was obtained in the studied lines.

Abstract

Analysis of genotype by environment interaction using different statistical methods is very important in plant breeding. In order to evaluate the seed yield stability of promising sesame lines using different parametric and non-parametric statistics, an experiment was conducted using 13 promising sesame lines with check variety Oltan at three locations of Karaj, Mashhad, and Moghan (Iran) in a randomized complete block design with four replications over two years (2016 and 2017). Combined analysis of variance for seed yield of promising sesame lines showed that the effect of genotype and the three-way interaction of genotype × year × location at the level of 0.01% probability were statistically significant. Karaj-96 environment with 1346 kg/ha and Mashhad-96 environment with 1001 kg/ha had the highest and lowest mean yield, respectively. The highest and lowest mean seed yield among genotypes in all test environments were related to G6 line with 1444 kg/ha and G12 line with 762 kg/ha, respectively. Heatmap along with cluster analysis divided both genotypes and stability parameters into three groups. Based on cluster analysis, genotype G12 was clustered into the first group, genotypes G1, G3, G7, G8, and G13 were clustered into the second group and the rest of the genotypes along with the check cultivar Oltan were clustered into the third group. The genotypes of the second group with the highest rank in most criteria of stability stasistics were stable compared to other genotypes and among them, the genotypes G8, G1 and G3 (with mean yields 1417, 1398 and 1291 Kg/ha, repectively) were selected and recommended in the test locations due to their average yield above the average yield of all genotypes.
