Abstract

An annotated checklist of the extant burrowing shrimps (infraorders Axiidea and Gebiidea) of southern waters of Iran is presented for the first time. Six species of Gebiidea and 18 species of Axiidea have been documented from the southern waters of Iran, based on published literature. The species belong to six families: Upogebiidae (6 species), Axiidae (1), Callianassidae (5), Callianideidae (1), Callichiridae (9) and Ctenochelidae (2). The Persian Gulf with 18 species appears to be more diverse than the Gulf of Oman with four species, and two species are common in the both gulfs. Corallianassa martensi (Miers, 1884) is recorded for the first time across the Iranian coast. The present finding is based on specimens collected from the Chabahar, Gulf of Oman coast. A brief diagnosis and illustrations of C. martensi are provided.

Abstract

The present study is part of an ongoing project on the mollusc diversity of Iraq. Specimens of the gastropod Pupa affinis were collected live from the intertidal zone of the northwest of the Persian Gulf, Iraq, in the Fao region. The species was identified to species level using standard taxonomic literature. It is widely distributed in the Persian Gulf; however, this study provides the first record from the Iraqi coast. Also, a checklist of the marine gastropods from the Iraqi coast is provided and now comprises 32 species belonging to 30 genera within 24 families.

Abstract

In the present study, the length-weight relationships (LWRs) of 148 specimens representing four species, including 20 specimens of Pseudorhombus javanicus, 70 Plicofollis dussumieri, 28 Scarus persicus and 30 S. fuscopurpureus collected from the Persian Gulf were estimated. The LWRs equations were found as W= 0.67×L2.23 for P. javanicus, W= 0.05×L2.38 for P. dussumieri, W= 0.62×L2.15 for S. persicus and W= 0.27×L2.41 for S. fuscopurpureus. The values of b ranged from 2.15 (S. persicus) to 2.41 (S. fuscopurpureus), with the coefficient of determination (r2) greater than 0.85. The present study presents the LWRs parameters for P. javanicus from the Persian Gulf, Iran for the first time and provides useful information for marine ecologists, fishery managers, the conservation of marine fishes, and the online database of FishBase.
