Abstract

To estimate the genetic components and the mode of inheritance for some morphological traits, six rainfed durum wheat genotypes (Chehel daneh, Gerdish, Zardak, Syrian-1, Waha and Knd1149//68/ward) and their complete diallel progenies were grown in a randomized complete blocks design with two replications in 2005-06 cropping season in Maragheh Dryland Agricultural Research Station. Results of diallel analysis revealed that additive variance were important for inheritance of grain yield, number of grain per spike, spike length and number of fertile tiller than dominance variance. The positive value of ‘F’, indicated that there were excess of dominant alleles in comparison to recessive ones in the parents for all of the studied traits. The average degree of dominance (H1/D) 0.5 showed partial dominance for grain yield, number of grain per spike, spike length, 100 grains weight and number of fertile tiller and over-dominance for peduncle length. Graphic analysis indicated that increase of grain yield, number of grain per spike, spike length, 100 grains weight and number of fertile tiller were under the control of combination of recessive and dominance alleles. Predominance of additive effects for grain yield demonstrated that breeding methods based on selection may be advantageous in improving of this trait. The highest value of this trait relevant to Gerdish (10.33 g/plant), therefore this genotype can be used as cross parent in breeding programs for receiving to lines with high yield and yield components. The cross of Waha × Knd1149//68/ward with high value of GY and GCA for this trait can be used as a suitable cross for hybrid production.

Abstract

Yarrow plant or plain short type yarrow, known as Achillea wilhelmsii C. kock, belongs to Asteraceae family. The present study was conducted in order to evaluate three different yarrow populations for determination of their genetic relationship, using morphological traits in the form of nested design as completely randomized with ten replications. General heritability of all traits ranged from 98 to 100, indicating a high heritability for these traits. The highest coefficient of genetic variation belonged to root diameter (1.66), indicating the existence of hifh diversity among genotypes. The lowest coefficient of genetic variation belonged to leaf length to width ratio (0.36), suggesting a low level of variation for this character. Based on PCA analysis, the first two components justified almost 90 percent of total variations. The three populations were nearly separated according to biplot analysis. Also, cluster analysis confirmed the biplot results and the populations were identified as three separated clusters which reflect the apparent difference among yarrow populations. The results of this study showed a wide genetic diversity for evaluated populations with regarding measured traits in Hormozgan province. Aforementioned findings indicated a dormant potentials of native yarrow populaton in south Iran and high value of these resources and obviously more attention need to be paid to identify, maintenance, assessing and apply them in breeding programs.

Abstract

In order to investigate yield stability, genotype×environment interactions and estimation of a number of genetic parameters related to yield and yield components, seven promising rice lines together with Shirodi and line 843 (as control cultivars) were evaluated. The experiment was carried out base on randomized complete block design with three replications in three locations of Mazandaran province, Iran (Tonekabon, Amol and Sari) during three growing seasons from 2012 to 2014. Analysis of variance revealed that there were significant differences among genotypes for yield at almost all three locations. Combined analysis of variance indicated that there were no significant differences among locations and years, whereas year×location×genotype interaction was found significant for grain yield, plant height and thousand grain weight. Results of stability analysis by univariate methods showed that genotype number 6 was the most stable genotype over all three locations, having less variance within locations and smaller coefficients of variance and a high grain yield (6020.8 kg ha-1 ). The high coefficient of phenotypic and genotypic variation was indicative to genetic variability for all of the studied traits. The broad-sense heritability ranged from 49.06% (plant height) to 92.48%% (number of filled grain per panicle) and was 59.46% for grain yield. The highest phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation and genetic gain over total average obtained for the number of grains per panicle. Thus, it is possible to improve this trait by selection method and could be used as a selection index to improve grain yield. Overall, genotype number 6 could be considered as a superior genotype to achieve a dwarf cultivar with stable yield.

Abstract

Breeding of adapted and variation germplasm can be a main element for strength of research political in stable agricultture system. This is achived by targeting variety selection onto different growing environments under natural heat and drought stresses. To realize this, breeding programs usually undertake a rigorous genotypes performance evaluation across locations and years mostly at the final stage of variety development process. More accurate selection of wheat genotypes requires reducing environmental effects for explaining of their genetic potential with appropriate analysis of genotype × environment. In this research, 18 improved bread wheat genotypes were planted in randomized compelet block design with 4 replications in Gachsaran, Khoramabad, Gonbad, Moghan and Ilam stations during three years (2011-2014). Simple and combined analysis variance were done on grain yield data. Due to significant interaction effects for Year × locatin and genotype × year × locatin, yield stability of considered genotypes were analysed using some parameteric and nonparametric methods. Obtained results showed genotypes no. 10 and 17 with 3107 and 3028 kg/ha had the highest grain yield. Based on parametric statistics: CVi, , , ،, MSY/L and MSPI and non-paramertric statistics: , , , Top, Mid, Low،, R-Sum, and SDR, G10 had more yield stability. More over, G12 and G17 showed suitable yiled stability among high production genotypes. Earliness Genotypes 10 and 17 lines had optimum plant height and partially high thousand kernel weight.

Abstract

In order to estimation genotypic correlation and heritability of some faba bean traits, 26 faba bean genotypes were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with three replications during 2014-16 growing seasons in Agricultural Research Sation of Borujerd located in Lorestan province, Iran. The restricted maximum likelihood (REML) was used to estimate the genotypic and phenotypic correlations, broad sence heritability and genetic gain. Analysis of variance based on least squares and REML indicated significant effect of genotype on days to maturity, plant height, hundred seed weight, pod length and dry seed yield. Genotype×year interactions were significant on all of the traits except of pod length. Borujerd cultivar (G26) and G20 had the highest dry seed yield in both of years. REML results indicated a significant positive genetic correlation between dry seed yield and biological yield and plant height. Also, there were a significant negative phenotypic correlation between dry seed yield and days to maturity, and significant positive phenotypic correlation between dry seed yield and plant height, biological yield and harvest index. So, the selection of early maturing genotypes with a higher yield is achievable and selection can be done to improve the performance of dry seed yield. Cluster analysis indicated variability among genotypes. According to values of broad sence heritability and genetic gain for plant height and high genetic correlation of this trait and dry seed yield; plant height can be used as a suitable trait for improving dry seed yield by selection.

Abstract

Sweet flag (Acorus calamus) is a perennial, semi-aquatic and aromatic plant of the family Acoraceae that, in addition to its multiple medicinal properties, is used in health, food and agricultural industries (as pest control). This research was conducted to comparasion study of genetic diversity of natural and regenerated plants from tissue culture of Arzefon, Pelesk and Alandan populations of Sweet flag by using ISSR molecular markers. Out of 15 screened primers, 9 primers produced the most polymorphic bands. Totally, these primers generated 83 bands, of which 52 bands (62.65%) were polymorphic. The percentage of polymorphic locus for natural and regenerated plants was 43.37% and 55.42%, respectively, and Nei’s genetic diversity (H) was calculated to be 0.239 for the two studied groups. The Shannon’s index (I) for natural and regenerated plants was estimated to be 0.251 ± 0.033 and 0.299 ± 0.031, respectively. Among the natural and regenerated groups, the highest genetic similarity was observed between the samples of Alandan population (0.63), and the lowest value was observed between the samples of Pelesk population (0.44). Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) showed that 94 % of genetic variation attributed to whithin groups and 6 % to between groups. Based on the results, the genetic diversity of the regenerated plants was higher than the natural plants. According to the results of the present research, the lowest rate of genetic divergence was observed between natural and regenerated plants of Alandan populatiuon, so the plants of this population could be suitable for domestication and cultivation in Iran.

Abstract

Additive main effect and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) and best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) are two methods for analyzing multi-environment trials (MET). In this study, seven selected rice lines were evaluated along with two check varieties based on randomized complete block design in Tonekabon, Amol and Sari (Iran) in three growing seasons of 2011-14. To quantify the genotypic stability, the best linear unbiased predictions of the genotype by environment interactions (GEI) were estimated, and singular value decomposition (SVD), which is the basis of AMMI analysis, was performed on the resulting matrix. The likelihood ratio test (LRT) showed that the effect of GEI was significant on grain yield, number of tillers, thousand grains weight and panicle length. Therefore, due to the significant interaction of genotype by environment, BLUP analysis can be performed on this data. The biplot of first principal component (PC1) of the environment versus nominal yield showed that genotypes 7 ([IR 67015-22-6-2-(A37632) × (Amol3 × Ramzanalitarom)]39), 6 (IR67015-22-6-2-(A37632) × (Amol3 × Ramzanalitarom)]126) and 2 ([IR64669-153-2-3 - (A8948) × (4Surinam Deylamani)]2), due to the lowest scores of the PC1, had a small share in the GEI and had more grain yield stability. The biplot of grain yield versus WAASB, placed genotypes in four regions, so that genotypes in the fourth region, including genotypes 6, 7, 8 (Line 843, check variety), and 9 (Shirodi, check variety), were due to large value of response variable (high grain yield) and high stability (low values of WAASB) were very productive and had extensive stability. Identification of genotypes with weighted average of WAASB and response variable (WAASBY) criteria showed that genotypes 6 and 7 were high yields and stable. Based on the multi-trait stability index (MTSI), G6 was also selected as the best genotype in terms of grain yield, evaluated traits and stability of each trait. Totally, genotype 6 was stable and superior based on the results of all methods.

Abstract

Durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L.), like most other crops, is affected by various stresses. Therefore, cultivars that, in addition to the ability to produce higher yields, can maintain their yield potential in different years and locations are considered superior cultivars. In order to obtain high-yielding and stable genotypes of durum wheat, 16 lines with two control cultivars Dehdasht and Seymareh were evaluated in four locations of Gachsaran, Gonbad, Khorramabad and Moghan based on randomized complete block design with four replications in three cropping seasons (2013-2016). Combined analysis of variance indicated a significant effect of genotype, environment and genotype by environment interaction. Genotypes G6 and G18 had the highest and lowest grain yield, respectively. Based on parametric methods, genotypes G3, G5, G15, G13 and G16 and based on non-parametric methods, genotypes G1, G3, G4, G5, G15 and G3 were the most stable genotypes. The most stable genotypes based on the total Kang sum-rank were genotypes G15, G5, G6 and G1. The Selection index of ideal genotype (SIIG) was used to integrate all indices into one index, based on which genotypes G5 and G15 were the superior genotypes with the highest SIIG index and grain yield. Based on all indices, genotypes G5 and G15 were the most stable genotype in terms of grain yield and can be used in cultivar introduction processes.
